Our group arrived Thursday afternoon in the city of <st1:city>Indianapolis</st1:city>. The city appeared to be full of trees, green
grasses, and small rivers and canal. We
dined at Tavern on South near the football stadium and what appeared to be a
working coal processing facility. We
were greeted by Matt Perkins, Dr. Mark Armfelt and Amanda Miller. Matt Perkins official title is ‘Marketing
Consultant’ in the US Food Industry & Consumer Affairs division of
Elanco. Dr. Mark Armfelt is Elanco’s
‘Dairy Technical Consultant’ and Amanda Miller is Elanco’s ‘Director of
Marketing.’ At dinner we had a brief
introduction to Elanco and their fight against world hunger. We learned Amanda grew up on a dairy farm and
is still active in her family business.</div>

John played a video about Elanco. Elanco was established in 1954. Elanco is a world leader in developing animal
health products and services which enhance animal health, wellness, and
performance. Elanco has more than 2,300
employees and offices in more than 40 countries while conducting business in
over 70 different countries. The vision
of Elanco is simple, it’s ‘Food and Companionship Enriching Life.’ Their mission is to ‘Make life sciences work
better for people by transforming animal protein production and companion
animal care.’ Elanco’s food animal
division focuses on helping to contribute to a safe, affordable, and abundant
food supply through disease treatment and management, production efficiency,
and food safety. Their companion animal
division focuses on strengthening the human-pet bond through products for
parasite control and separation anxiety.

During our dinner meeting the night before, Amanda brought
up the numbers 50-100-70. When we
arrived at Elanco and watched the first two video’s we saw that number
again. Basically it means that in the
year 2050, we will need to produce 100% more food than we (humans) have ever
produced in the history of man-kind. In
order to achieve that goal, we must depend on 70% of our food coming from
efficiency-improving technology. There
is a large emerging middle class throughout developing countries. As the middle class grows, the demand for
protein from eggs and meat grows. Elanco
estimates the demand for dairy products will exceed global supply in the next 5
years. As the number one milk producing
state, we should utilize all technologies and innovations available to us to
meet that demand. </div>

of Reciprocity (Obligation): Give away or do something of perceived value to or
for someone, and they will feel compelled to do likewise. (Ex: Don’t worry
you’d do the same for me! They invited
me to their party, so I have to invite them.
Ask for a large favor and then offer a small request after getting
rejected)</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in; mso-list: l2 level1 lfo5; tab-stops: list .5in; text-indent: -.25in;">
<!--[if !supportLists]-->2)<span style="font-size: 7pt;"> </span><!--[endif]-->Law
of Scarcity: The majority of people will do far more to avoid losing something
they already have than they will to get something they don’t have (People want
more of what they can’t have). Fear of
loss is a much greater motivator to most than the possibility of gain. When faced with too many choices, most people
can become paralyzed and do nothing at all.
(Ex: Limited supply, one-of-a-kind offers, window of opportunity,
exclusivity of information)</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in; mso-list: l2 level1 lfo5; tab-stops: list .5in; text-indent: -.25in;">
<!--[if !supportLists]-->3)<span style="font-size: 7pt;"> </span><!--[endif]-->Law
of Authority: the more expert a person is in a given area, the more features (not
benefits) that person needs information about to make a decision. Credibility is one of the common denominators
of success at influencing others. (Credibility = Expertise + Trustworthiness)</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in; mso-list: l2 level1 lfo5; tab-stops: list .5in; text-indent: -.25in;">
<!--[if !supportLists]-->4)<span style="font-size: 7pt;"> </span><!--[endif]-->Law
of Consistency: Once people have taken a public stand on an issue it is
increasingly more difficult to get them to change their minds. To change an attitude or opinion, first
change the behavior. In short, you have
to get people to do something if you want them to say “yes!” (Get the other
person to write something down and participate in the discussion) If you want to change your own or someone
else’s behavior, the first thing you can often do is change the
environment. When one is exposed to a
new environment, the brain has to change; it enters into a state of flux and
typically becomes more suggestible.
NEVER ask a question that will pin the other person down to a permanent
“no” response relative to your request.
Once most people choose something, write something down, or say
something, whether it makes any sense or not, whether it is in their best
interest or not, they tend to stick with that decision regardless of how that
decision was made.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in; mso-list: l2 level1 lfo5; tab-stops: list .5in; text-indent: -.25in;">
<!--[if !supportLists]-->5)<span style="font-size: 7pt;"> </span><!--[endif]-->Law
of Consensus: The more people there are in a group the more likely that the
vast majority of the group will comply with whatever the leader is
proposing. Nothing binds two people,
groups, or nations like a common enemy.</div>

<!--[if !supportLists]-->6)<span style="font-size: 7pt;"> </span><!--[endif]-->Law
of Liking: People feel most comfortable
when others seem to be like them in appearance, beliefs, or values. (People want to be comfortable) People like to talk about what the love and
what they know about! (Ask questions to demonstrate interest in them. Talk about yourself only to the extent
necessary to point out areas of mutual interests or similarities.)</div>

After Matt’s presentation on the principles of persuasion,
we went over a <st1:country-region>US</st1:country-region>
retailer milk & yogurt study. The
study included about 6,500 participants.
Consumers chose their products based on 1) Freshness and 2) Pricing. About 10% of the participants said they seek
out Organic or Hormone Free. 1 in 3
consumers stated that they read the label; however less than 1 in 10 aren’t
influenced by what they buy. The most
popular label in stores is “Natural.”
The best selling label is “Guaranteed Fresh.” Labels including Antibiotic Free and rBST
free only really matter to Organic consumers.
Most consumers do not know what rBST is and don’t pay attention to
it. Consumers automatically believe
there are hormones and antibiotics in their products when their products aren’t
labeled but others are labeled antibiotic and hormone free.</div>

Dr Mark Armfelt presented us on some of Elanco’s
products. The first product he presented
was Posilac (rBST). bST is short for
Bovine Somatotropin which is a naturally occurring protein hormone produced in
the pituitary gland of dairy cows. BST
helps direct nutrients to the mammary gland for increased milk production. There are four variants of BST (190 or 191
amino acids). Cows with high bST levels
including those treated with rBST will produce calves with naturally higher bST
levels.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Unhealthy cows are unable to absorb rBST effectively. Inadequate nutrition & poor management
will produce lower production levels even though bST levels may be higher. It has been observed that cows with higher
levels of BST have a higher pregnancy rate.

The human body is unable to absorb bST because it is a

are digested, and break down quickly. </div>

The benefits of rBST is obvious: more milk per cow. With more milk per cow, less land is needed
which in turn has a lower environmental impact.
If one million cows produced 10 more pounds of milk daily, the
environmental impact would be reduced by 9% annually (334,000 fewer animals
required to meet demand, 2.5 million fewer tons of feed, 540,000 acres less
cropland, 3 million fewer tons of manure, and the carbon footprint would be
reduced by 1.85 million metric tons).</div>

About 95% of consumers just want affordable abundant food. 4% of consumers are considered ‘Lifestyle’ which buy luxury/gourmet foods, Organic, and/or have gardens. 1% of consumers are considered the ‘Fringe’ group. These consumers tend to be the most vocal and powerful. They are the ones who impose food bans, restrictions, and propositions. They are also most likely not to purchase dairy or meat products.</div>

We have 9 billion people to feed in 2050, but have very limited resources. Today, both beef and dairy utilizes less land and water and produces less manure. We need to understand the global impact of our decisions both socially and economically. </div>

After Amanda’s session, we were given a tour of the headquarters by Nancy Wethington. <st1:city>Nancy</st1:city> took us through both buildings and into the customer service call center. She said the only complaints they get regarding their products is usually the packaging. The entire building is filled with photos of people from all over the world and of agricultural operations. The buildings themselves are made of mostly recycled material and are what us Californians would consider very ‘green.’ </div>

Overall it was a great experience for us dairy leaders. Elanco’s staff was very friendly and welcoming to us. We learned a lot about the relationship between agriculture, retailers, and consumers on a global level. In <st1:state>California</st1:state>, we come in contact with more people in the ‘fringe’ group. We are fighting them every day to produce quality milk which helps feed families all around. We respect everyone’s choice to eat or drink what they like even though it may include tofu and soy or almond beverages. Our role as dairy leaders is to continue educating everyone including both consumers, retailers, processors, and dairy farmers on our good dairy husbandry, quality milk products, and to always think globally.</div>

member for Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard. Next in our lineup we met
with Patricia Ross, for Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, followed by Kristen Glenn
for Congressman Tom McClintock. Next we met with John Lowrey for
Congressman Joe Baca, followed by Lillian McFarlan and Devin Rhinerson for
Senator Dianne Feinstein. Then ending the day meeting with a staff member

each of these meetings, we gave our stories on what we were experiencing in the
California Dairy Industry and let the staff members know that we were being
affected by all of the legislation going through. Some of the topics we
covered with them were: the Margin Insurance Program, Ethanol Subsidies,
Trans-Pacific Partners, Labor Issues, Estate Tax, Federal Milk Marketing
Orders, and a few other Farm Bill issues such as the King Amendment and
Conservation Title. We all chimed in on certain issues and fed off of
each other, giving our personal side of how legislation is and could be
affecting us as individual farms and as an industry. </span></div>

concluded with a very nice dinner at Capitol Grill with Charlie Garrison.
It was a beautiful restaurant and had fantastic food and wine. After
dinner, many of the group went out with Charlie to a bar on top of a hotel near
the White House. Even though it was raining, the covered roof had open
sides looking out and we could see the White House, Washington Monument and
Lincoln Memorial. It was a beautiful site to see with all of them lit up
at night. </span></div>

was a nice sunny day. We started out with a good ride on the metro over
to the Congress building as the day before. Once there, we had a meeting
with Kyle Lombardi, staff member for Congressman Kevin McCarthy, followed by
Vincent Rocha for Congressmen Jerry McNearney. Next we met with Mary
Knigge from the Democrat Staff Agricultural Committee. Following Mary, we
met with Andrew House for Congressman Devin Nunes, then over to the Senate
building to meet with Kim Alton on labor issues for Senator Dianne
Feinstein. Next we were back to the Congress side to meet with Donald
Grady for Congressman Jim Costa, then Ben Gutman for member of Congress, Zoe

day was a little less stressful. We were familiar with the topics and the
questions that the staff members might have for us. We were also more
familiar with how our arguments would be received by different staff
members. I was also very impressed with the Senate. They really
seemed to take genuine interest in what we were saying. I was also
impressed at the level of bi-partisan support we received through Charlie
Garrison’s efforts. I felt a touch unprepared for each meeting as
far as knowing who their congressman was. Some research on my part to see
where their district was and what was in their area along with what their
affiliations are would have been wise. That all went to show that I need
to take it more seriously and to follow things that are going on in Washington
D.C. more closely.</span></div>

to pack, say farewell and thank Charlie, and off to the airport. Charlie
really impressed me not only from meeting and spending time with him, but
seeing how the people he met with on a regular basis responded to our
presence. Charlie is doing a great job for us in D.C. and I am glad to
see what an influence he is on our behalf. Most people we met with knew
of the issues and had a good idea how it was or could affect us. It was
very encouraging to know that we have someone fighting for us in the ‘big leagues’.
Thanks Charlie! </span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: ""Times New Roman"","serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "MS Gothic";">As
for Washington D.C., I learned a great deal. It showed me how much of an
impact we can make actually visiting with these staff members. I also
learned that I should be more up to date on what is going on in D.C. The
issues we talked about with the staff members weren’t new to me but I wasn’t as
familiar with them as I should have been. The Farm Bill issue was
interesting to me in that no one seemed really motivated to get anything
done. The concerns we brought up were valid and pertinent but everyone
was waiting on other issues based on who gets elected in November. At the
end of the day, it is still a political stage.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: ""Times New Roman"","serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "MS Gothic";">During
our talks with each staff member, it was neat to see how they responded.
Some really appreciated our input and took it to heart, others knew what we
were saying already and it was a good reinforcement. Others seemed to not be
terribly interested. I was also very surprised at the difference in the
Congress verses the Senate. The Senate side really seemed to have their
ducks in a row. They had already passed their version of the Farm Bill
and seemed to be much more receptive to what we had to say. I was very
impressed with all the staff members of the Senate whom we met with. It
was nice to learn that we can make a difference and not everyone is against the
dairy industry. </span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-indent: .5in;">
<span style="font-family: ""Times New Roman"","serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "MS Gothic";">To
conclude this Journal, I would like to say that I really enjoyed my time in
Washington D.C. It was a beautiful visit filled with a lot of neat
history and sightseeing but also with a great deal of respect for those who
speak on our behalf. It’s easy to sit at home and complain about the way
something is or hear one side of the story and buy into it, but to really
search it out and get involved enough to make a difference in what matters,
that takes a lot of time and effort. I am very thankful for WUD and
Charlie Garrison for telling our side of the story and keeping Dairy’s best
interest at heart. It’s nice to know we have a group like that fighting for
us on the Federal level. </span></div>

<div style="text-indent: .5in;">
Session #3 of the Western United Dairy Leaders was
held in Modesto California at the WUD office. The general topic of this session
was California dairy economics and California milk pricing. Annie AcMoody,
director of Economic Analysis for WUD, gave the first presentation for the
session which was an overview of California pricing and the pooling system.
Annie did a great job explaining a complicated system leaving everyone with a
better understanding of how the pooling and pricing system works in California.
</div>
<div style="text-indent: .5in;">
Dr. William Schiek from Dairy Institute of
California gave a presentation on Domestic and Global Market Outlook. He went
over the basics of how the milk price is driven by supply and demand. Following
Dr. Schiek’s presentation we met up with Michael Marsh and Ray Souza for dinner
at Surlas Restaurant in Modesto. Throughout dinner Ray gave an overview of how
the California milk pricing system has change over the years, especially in
regards to milk pooling. It was interesting to hear the history of the pricing
system from a dairyman who milked cows before milk pooling was around. </div>
<div style="text-indent: .5in;">
The following day we met back up at the WUD office
after breakfast. Mike Francesconi gave the first presentation for the day
giving an overview of what the Dairy Marketing Branch does within CDFA. Venetta
Reed, also from CDFA presented on how cost studies are conducted through
processors and how those costs are factored into the pricing system. Amber
Rankin gave a presentation on the California hearing process and the difference
between the Federal hearing process. Following lunch, Mike Francesconi spoke
with us regarding Cost of Production Studies CDFA. This was interesting to see
how the studies are conducted with a range of different styles of dairies. This
is valuable information for dairymen to compare their numbers with. John Lee,
Chief of the CDFA Milk Pooling Branch described his job and an overview of what
the duties of the CDFA Milk Pooling Branch are. John Bressett from the producer
Security Assurance Team talked about their role within CDFA and how they
monitor transactions between milk handlers and producers. Don Shippelhoute
wrapped up the second day with an open discussion of milk pooling. This was a
very interactive presentation and a good way to end a long day of speakers.</div>
<div style="text-indent: .5in;">
The third and final day of the session we met up at
the WUD office once again. Michael Marsh gave an overview of current issues
going on in the dairy industry and how WUD is taking a proactive approach. Eric
Erba, Senior Vice President from CDI, talked to us about the role co-ops play
in transporting milk and making sure that milk has a home. This was an
interesting presentation and eye-opening to see all that is involved once milk
leaves the dairy. Tiffany LaMendola from Blimling and Associates spoke with us
about margin management. This was a great presentation with material that is
especially helpful now with markets being so volatile. </div>
<div style="text-indent: .5in;">
This was a very valuable session as milk pricing is
a topic that many dairymen are not comfortable with. The presenters in
this session helped with my understanding of the California Pricing system and
why things are the way they are. </div>

Discussions focused on global hunger and rising to meet the needs of our growing population. <br />
<br />
By the year 2050, the world will be home to 9 Billion people, and we will need to produce 100% More Food to be able to feed everyone.<br />
<br />
On the drive to and from the Elanco office, class members got the chance to see some of the drought ridden, dried up corn fields along the highway. A stark contrast to the fields we left in CA.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-size: 13.5pt;"> Session #3 was
the economic session and was held in Modesto, CA, primarily at the Western
United Dairymen's office. We started out the first day meeting with Annie
AcMoody, from Western United, where we went over the California pricing system
and how pooling and the different classes all contribute to our "mailbox
price". We also heard from Dr. William Schiek, from Dairy Institute
of California on what the outlook for both global and local markets are for the
coming months. Following this we went to dinner at Surla's Restaurant
where we talked with guest, Ray Souza, about what the milk pooling system did
for producers compared to what had been the norm prior to pooling in
California.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-size: 13.5pt;"> The second day
we were at the WUD office again. We had a busy day of speakers but all
with great information. We heard from Mike Francesconi, from CDFA, about
the function and duties of the Dairy Marketing Branch within the CDFA.
Following Mike, we heard from Venetta Reed, also from CDFA. She
talked about the Manufacturing Cost Studies which they do, and how they play
into the pricing formulas. Next, Amber Rankin talked to us about the
California Hearing process which is how anything is changed regarding pricing
and pooling regulations and formulas. She then gave us a nice overview on
the California vs. Federal systems. We went over pricing and marketing as
well as pooling regulations and special circumstances like producer-handlers.
We then had a nice lunch at the WUD office and heard from Mike
Francesconi again, about the Cost of Production studies which was very
interesting to me as a great set of benchmarks with which to see how our dairy
is doing on the cost side of things. Then after Mike, we heard from John
Lee from the CDFA Milk Pooling Branch. John gave us an overview of what
the Milk Pooling Branch does. Next was John Bressett who talked to us
about the Producer Security Assurance Team. They deal with making sure
that we as producers, are not being taken advantage of by processors, trucking
costs, etc. Lastly we heard from Don Shippelhoute who gave a very
detailed discussion on milk pooling in California. We met at the Firkin
and Fox pub for dinner and followed up with a Modesto Nuts baseball game.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-size: 13.5pt;"> The third day of the
session was also at the WUD office. We began the day hearing from Mike
Marsh about Western United Dairymen and all that they do for us as producers,
along with their involvement in recent and current issues affecting the dairy
industry. Then we met with Eric Erba, from California Dairies. He
went over the challenges beyond the farm such as transporting the milk,
balancing supply and demand, and plant capacity and production base. To
end the session, we heard from Tiffany LaMendola, from Blimling and Associates,
Inc. She gave us a very in depth look at hedging and risk management
through use of the futures markets on the milk side. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: #1a1a1a; font-size: 13.5pt;"> This third session
was overall very informative. Every speaker gave a great presentation and
they were all extremely willing to answer our questions. I really enjoyed
getting into great discussions with all of them and was very engaged with this
whole session. I feel I really gained a lot from learning how milk in
California is actually priced, and why it is this way. The topics
relating to the future of the industry were very interesting; talking
about what problems there are and possible solutions to be found to overcome
those as an industry. Each session continues to be very challenging and
engaging, I am very much looking forward to the final two!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Session # 3<br />
On August 7-9 the Western United Dairy Leaders met in Modesto for our Session # 3. We met in Modesto, CA at the WUD office in down town Modesto. This session was about California milk pricing. Our first presentation was on the milk pricing formula. Annie AcMoody, WUD economist, headed this presentation. It was very informational. Annie painted a good picture of a very complicated California pricing system. I left there with a comfortable idea of how it all works.<br />
Following that, Dr. William Schiek talked to us about the domestic and global market outlook. Dr. William Schiek is an economist from the Dairy Institute of California. Being the second presentation, it was really interesting. Looking at current and future markets gives a positive outlook for dairy producers.<br />
That evening we went to dinner at Surlas restaurant with Mike Marsh and Ray Sousa. Dinner was very good. Ray Sousa is a past president and board member of WUD. He gave us a good idea of what it was like being a dairyman before the California pooling and quota system. He is very knowledgeable on both the dairy producer side and the political side of the industry. It seems like we need more people like Ray in California.<br />
Wednesday morning after breakfast, we met again at the WUD office to meet a few people from CDFA. Candace Gates from the Dairy Marketing Branch talked to us about its role in setting milk prices. Mike Francesconi talked to us about Manufacturing costs and Cost of Production studies. Amber Rankin, an ag economist, talked to us about the California Hearing Process. They Were all very interesting lectures that provided a good insight to their roles in the dairy industry.<br />
Following our last break of the dairy, a few gentlemen from the California Pooling Branch and Producer Security Trust Fund talked to us about their roles in the industry. John Lee, who is the CDFA Pooling Branch Chief, gave us a short intro on how the branch is set up. Later Don Shippelhoute closed things up with talking about the different pooling operations. This presentation was really interesting because there were so many questions about how the pool worked. Explain the operation of the pool took a colorful drawing on the white board that needed lots of explanation.<br />
Later that even the Dairy Leaders went to have appetizers at the Firkin & Fox pub with Annie AcMoody. Following that, we went to a Modesto Nuts baseball game. It was very entertaining and a good bonding experience for the group.<br />
Thursday was only a half day for us. We met at the WUD office again and kicked things off with Mike Marsh informing us about all the things WUD are dealing with in our industry right now.<br />
After that Dr. Eric Erba, from CDI talked to us about transportation, milk procurement challenges, plant capacity, and production base issues that CDI deals with. This was an interesting presentation but maybe a little long. I say that because we got shorted on time with our last speaker, Tiffany LaMendola.<br />
Tiffany LaMendola, from Blimling and Associates, talked to us about Margin Management. It was really interesting stuff. I just wish we had enough time to talked about it and ask more questions.<br />
Overall Session # 3 was the most interesting so far. Milk pricing is one of the most confusing and hardest things to comprehend in the dairy industry. Leaving session # 3 though, I feel a lot more comfortable and have a better understanding of milk pricing and everything that goes into it.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00717632686931404459noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2991365316015660229.post-29413515464658897062012-08-08T23:11:00.001-07:002012-08-08T23:13:15.153-07:00The night life!!Down town bonding as a crew...<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxHS4msdDGDslG0-1rWQ2ZwpiamFuxuajfb5panNaIASOmijlGNGzuu20dKl2PAtidQzud-oqtiYv7At7JNhOaZ04z0SNnBFDbq3BSt38AEpfTBfYadt2wE3PPuCd4rtsqw37bSTUIxIeX/s640/blogger-image--1473658831.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxHS4msdDGDslG0-1rWQ2ZwpiamFuxuajfb5panNaIASOmijlGNGzuu20dKl2PAtidQzud-oqtiYv7At7JNhOaZ04z0SNnBFDbq3BSt38AEpfTBfYadt2wE3PPuCd4rtsqw37bSTUIxIeX/s640/blogger-image--1473658831.jpg" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00717632686931404459noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2991365316015660229.post-62246119768047642932012-08-08T21:44:00.001-07:002012-08-08T23:10:25.123-07:00Play Ball!Tonight CA Dairy Leaders are enjoying a relaxing evening with the Modesto Nuts, after studying Pricing & Pooling all day! <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ7vvholjratDdHPcQ8bnuwk9uUx7FMo2-_g-hik0MlVOuQOwQtfflahEpvYWg8wM-kdGmGRNpZ5qGrYx2_PmuYQg672Xx5S63iIbdhhBcXsCWEN972wBjbTNH6l0g1KyrbmbW_ouHCYkH/s640/blogger-image--1711332616.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ7vvholjratDdHPcQ8bnuwk9uUx7FMo2-_g-hik0MlVOuQOwQtfflahEpvYWg8wM-kdGmGRNpZ5qGrYx2_PmuYQg672Xx5S63iIbdhhBcXsCWEN972wBjbTNH6l0g1KyrbmbW_ouHCYkH/s640/blogger-image--1711332616.jpg" /></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09253410713443976902noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2991365316015660229.post-73459249674968085352012-07-09T15:29:00.003-07:002012-07-09T15:29:18.763-07:00session #2 synopsis<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

The second session of the WUD Dairy
Leaders program took place on June 12th in Sacramento, Ca. The
purpose of this session was to gain an understanding of the California state
legislation process while also meeting politicians that have contributed to the
California dairy industry. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
Upon meeting in Sacramento we were
greeted by Western United’s lobbyist, Mr. Gary Conover at the Broiler Room.
Gary was our tour guide throughout our stay in Sacramento and proved to be very
knowledgeable with what he does. While eating dinner at the Broiler Room, Gary
explained the basics of the Legislative process with the help of Jim Collin, the
chief consultant for Assemblywoman Cathleen Galgiani. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
The following day we started the
day off with a tour of the Capital building. This was a very interesting tour as
we learned the history of our state capital and got to view the senate and
assembly rooms. After our tour concluded we met up with Mr. Conover where we
sat in on a Committee hearing for Senate Labor and Industrial Relations. This
was a great experience as we got to see how a Committee hearing is run while
listening to two conflicting parties. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
After gaining an understanding of
how a Committee operates we spent the remainder of the day with Mr. Conover who
took us to meet key politicians that generally ally with the dairy industry<a href="" name="_GoBack"></a>. This was a great experience as we were able to visit with
these politicians in their offices. By the end of the day we had met with
Assemblywomen Connie Conway, Senator Anthony Cannella, Assemblyman David
Valadao, Assemblywomen Fiona Ma, Senator Leland Yee, Senator Tom Berryhill, and
his brother Assemblyman Bill Berryhill. Meeting with these politicians allowed
us to gain an understanding of what life as a Politian is about while also
becoming more familiar with the faces that represent us. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .5in;">
On the final day of our trip we
were introduced on the Senate and Assembly floor at the start of the session.
This was a great honor to be introduced on the floor amongst all of our state
Senators and Assemblymen. Overall this was a great trip that gave me insight as
to what goes on in Sacramento and the whole legislative process. Mr. Conover was
invaluable on this trip as we would have been lost without him.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He did a great job informing our group with
all he could and was a huge help through our time in Sacramento. </div>

<span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;"> T<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=2991365316015660229" name="_GoBack"></a>he second session was really a great eye opener into the
legislative process in California. This was a much needed review for me–it's
been since high school that I really went over the legislative process. I
was looking forward to learning a great deal throughout this session and also
getting to meet with new people and spending time with my fellow classmates.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;"> The first night, we met for dinner with Gary
Conover, a lobbyist for Western United Dairymen, and Jim Collins, a consultant.
We met at the Broiler Room where we enjoyed a nice dinner where Gary and
Jim gave us a good intro to the legislative process in California. Gary
passed out papers to us expanding on what we talked about. I had a hard
time fully understanding all of what we talked about but throughout the week,
everything sank in well.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;"> The second
day started out with a tour of the State Capitol. We went into the upper
levels of both the Senate and Assembly buildings and also got a great tour of
the outer gardens. The history was very interesting to me and certainly
made me appreciate the Capitol building. After our tour, we sat in on a Senate
meeting in the Labor and Industrial Relations division. They were
reviewing bills and moving or closing them. The bills were introduced,
given defense and offense, and then voted upon. We watched a few bills go
through and then were off to meet with different Assembly and Senate members.
We met with many Assemblymen and women, as well as Senators. I
enjoyed meeting and talking with all of them. I was especially impressed
with David Valadao (R - Assembly) and Fiona Ma (D - Assembly). David is a
dairyman from Hanford area and was a very comfortable guy to be around.
Easy going and told it like it is. He did not come off as a
politician, but as a man who genuinely cares about where the state is headed.
Fiona was very impressive to me also, in that she took time to learn
about agriculture and where her food comes from by visiting many places.
She handed us a three sided document full of places she had visited;
dairies, vineyards, water districts, wineries, olive orchards, cotton, row
crops and citrus, just to name a few. I was very impressed by her drive
to learn about the industry.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 13.5pt;"> Finally, on the third day we
were introduced on both the floors. Senator Cannella introduced
us on the floor of the Senate and Assemblyman Valadao introduced us on the
floor of the Assembly. This concluded our week in Sacramento.
Overall I really enjoyed this session. It was nice to meet and talk
with members and also learn about the legislative process as well as the
history behind it all in California. I really appreciated Gary Conover
giving us the inside scoop and showing us the Capitol, introducing us, and
teaching us; I really enjoyed everything. I will be looking forward to
the next session in August!</span></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16998776985131677768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2991365316015660229.post-3400360751129143402012-07-09T14:54:00.001-07:002012-07-09T14:54:56.953-07:00<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">After joining my fellow Dairy Leaders early
Wednesday morning, we met Mr. Gary Conover for breakfast and discussed the day
ahead of us. First item on the agenda
for the day was a tour of the State Capitol.
Kathy, our tour guide for the morning, was very knowledgeable about the
various buildings, rooms and also the history of our state and its
legislature. Despite the fact that the pace
of the tour was almost a jog (which in heels is not at all pleasant), it was a
great start to the Dairy Leaders adventures at the State Capitol and also, a
great way to really develop an appreciation for the State of California and all
that it encompasses. Following the tour,
we met back with Mr. Gary Conover and attended the Senate Labor and Industrial
Relations Committee. This was
interesting experience. The pace at
which each issue was presented and then decided upon and the way the people,
both for and opposing the issue at hand, either presented their side or supported
one or the other was incredibly quick and straight to the point. If this was all a person knew about how
business in the Capitol was conducted, they could easily come to the conclusion
that it is an efficient body of government.
Lucky for the Dairy Leaders, we were able to observe the running of
business in the Capitol outside of this room and quickly discover the chaos
that occurs within. During our visit
there were demonstrations and protests occurring with thousands of participants
in attendance. Hundreds of them were
swarming the interior of the Capitol; an interesting experience to say the
least, especially when you are dressed in a manner that one might assume you to
be an attorney or politician. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">Following a short break we began an afternoon of
meeting with various Senators and Assemblypersons, all who have been supportive
of Western United Dairymen and their agenda within the Capitol. First up to meet for the Dairy Leaders was the
lovely and very dynamic Assemblywoman Connie Conway. Assemblywoman Conway, the Assembly Minority
Leader, explained to us how she became involved in politics and also expressed
her no nonsense methods of doing business in Sacramento. She told us about her dealings with those on
the other side of the aisle and also about her upcoming meeting with the
California Air Resource Board. Our
meeting with her was very exciting and left quite an impression. The Dairy Leaders then met with Senator Anthony
Cannella, the Chair of the Senate Ag Committee, before making our way to the
Assembly Agriculture Committee hearing, which lasted at most five minutes due
to it being budget week. Assemblyman
David Valadao was our next meeting.
Assemblyman Valadao was a unique meeting due to his ties to the dairy
industry. His family has two dairies in
the Hanford area and prior to becoming a politician, he was very involved in
the running and success of these two dairies.
During our meeting he discussed the various roadblocks he has
experienced in Sacramento and also his plans to be in Washington, D.C. if
successful in the November elections.
Assemblyman Valadao discussed his family with us and how he makes being
in Sacramento work with a wife and three young children still living on the
dairy in Hanford. Next up for the Dairy
Leaders was Democrat of San Francisco, Fiona Ma, Assembly Speaker Pro Temp. She was anything, but a disappointment.
During our meeting she discussed her beginnings in the Capitol and how after
numerous farm visits, an open mind and a desire to continue learning about
agriculture in the State of California, she votes in a manner more so aligned
with Assembly Republicans. Assemblywoman
Ma is definitely proof that knowledge is power and that the more a person
becomes educated about what we as agriculturist do, the greater the chances are
that they will understand why certain practices and protocols are in place and
develop a respect for the industry.
Senator Tom Berryhill was our next meeting on the afternoon agenda who
had words of hope and faith about a bright future laying ahead for California,
followed by Senator Leland Yee, a Democrat from San Francisco. Assemblyman Bill Berryhill shared with us his
ideas to ensure the future success of agriculture in California through various
water projects involving the Delta. He
also took the time to explain the issues that he has come up against and how
his ideas differ from those presented by the Governor. The afternoon at the
Capitol ended in Assemblywoman Cathleen Galgiani’s office, meeting with her
staff. Assemblywoman Galgiani, Chair of
the Assembly Ag Committee, was able to meet with us briefly following the
adjourning of the committee earlier in the day.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">This day spent at the Capitol, with the opportunity
to meet and converse with various Assemblypersons and Senators was definitely a
different experience than what was expected.
The people we met with were very serious about their jobs and all had a
common goal of putting California back on track for all the generations to
come. They were passionate about their
jobs, and passionate about developing leaders to step into their roles once
they have termed out. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<b><u><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Session 2,
Day 3 </span></u></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<b><u><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><br /></span></u></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">On our last day, we met Mr. Gary Conover for
breakfast once again before heading off to the Capitol. This time rather than meeting with members of
the Assembly and Senate we were introduced by Senator Anthony Cannella on the
Senate Floor and then headed over to the Assembly Floor to be introduced by
Assemblyman David Valadao. After
Assemblyman Valadao introduced us, we were able to sit through the remainder of
the session and then step outside with the Assemblyman for a few moments and
talk about an array of topics from high speed rail to the prison and jail
systems in California to the protestors we had witnessed one day prior. After a couple more photos on the Assembly
Floor, we were on our way home and session 2 for the Class XI Dairy Leaders was
complete.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">A special thanks to Mr. Gary Conover, who made our
session in the Capitol an all encompassing experience. We were able to see firsthand the value of
networking and building solid relationships with people and the places that
these two things can take you if done well.
Thank you as well to the Assemblypersons and Senators that took the time
out their schedules (during BUDGET week) to meet with us and talk about a
number of different issues impacting not only our industry, but California as
well. You all definitely have lit a fire
under the Dairy Leaders Class XI.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">Session two was a look at
the State Legislation and political process. I found it very interesting how it
worked. After unpacking my bags I walked to The Broiler where we were going to
meet Gary Conover, a lobbyist for Western United Dairymen. As a group we
visited with him and a political veteran Jim Collin, and learned about the
lobbyists role and Mr. Collin’s role as the Committee Consultant. Gary gave us
a review of what was planned for the next day and the different bills that we
would be able to watch in action.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">Early the next morning we
started in the Capital, with a tour of the buildings. I had never been inside
so it was amazing to see how nice it was. Kathy Potopaulos gave the tour. I
learned that the Capital was constructed when Abraham Lincoln was President.
Indeed, it was a very old building. We walked to the assembly room where there
are 80 assembly men or women. There needs to be a simple majority to pass a
bill. Next we walked to the Senate where there are 40 Senators. Inside
the Senate room, the voting is non-electronic which was interesting. A bill can
start in either house and a session always starts with a prayer and the Pledge
of Allegiance. From there we walked to the State Park outside. We viewed many
different plants and trees that had been given as gifts to the State from
Foreign Governments. There are a total of 2,000 different plants and trees
there. I really enjoyed seeing the non native plants that the world had to
offer. While outside we also witnessed a large group of protestors, this group
was bigger than normal, protesting for the budget completion. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">Our first introduction was
to Senator Anthony Cannella, who is the Chair of the Senate Ag Committee. We
talked for a short minute, for we could meet with him again the following day.
Assembly woman, Connie Conway, was intriguing to talk to. Her son has a large
dairy in Tulare, so she was very informative about all of the latest dairy
issues. Next we visited with David Valadao from Hanford, who has two dairies in
Tipton. David has big plans for his future; he was looking to get elected to
Congress in Washington, D.C. to represent dairies and our interests on a bigger
scale. Assembly woman Fiona Ma was next; she is a Democrat from San Francisco
with an open mind and common sense towards the Agriculture of California. The
Berryhill brothers were up next. They both realized both houses need to
eliminate the Bipartisanship and agree that everyone needs to work together to
tackle the tough issues. Bill Berryhill being a farmer understands the need to
get our water resources on track. He proposed a plan to build a pipeline to
move water from the Delta to a reservoir in Las Vegueros for storage. I agree
that is an issue that needs to be looked at before we have major problems. In
Summary this trip was very interesting and beneficial for all of us! </span><br />

Session 2<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">On Tuesday June 12, the WUD Dairy Leaders met in Sacramento,
CA for our session on the California state legislation. We kicked off the trip
with dinner at the Broiler Room. This is where we were first introduced to Mr.
Gary Conover and Mr. Jim Collin.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Mr. Conover is the Lobbyist for Western United Dairymen, or
in other words, the Director of Government Relations. He is a contract lobbyist
however, which means that he has the ability to lobby for other special
interest groups that do not conflict with WUD beliefs. Along with WUD, Gary is
currently lobbying for the CA School Nutrition Coalition. He is one of 2,000
registered lobbyists in CA.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Gary was our host/tour guide for our stay in Sacramento. He
showed us all the “ins and outs” in all areas of the Capitol. He scheduled all
our activities and meetings for the 3 days. Basically without Gary, we all
would have been completely lost and confused.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Mr. Jim Collin is the chief consultant for Assemblywomen
Cathleen Galgiani. Cathleen sits as the chair for the Assembly Ag Com Board. So
therefore, Jim is a lead consultant for the board. On Tuesday night Jim and
Gary helped break down the CA state government process as best as possible.
With all the different legs and sections of the government, it was no easy
task. Jim stated himself that after 30 years of working in Sacramento, he is
still learning the process himself!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">On Wednesday morning after breakfast, we started for the Capitol
where we had a tour. This was extremely eye opening. Our tour guide was loaded
with information and answered all of our questions with ease. There were so
many different areas to the Capitol that we covered that I needed to take a
second tour to get more comfortable with it. The most interesting part of the
tour was being in the senate and assembly rooms. There is so much history in
those two rooms that it was breathtaking. We concluded the tour with walking
back into the Capitol through a mess of protestors who were purposely causing
problems and getting arrested. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Immediately after the tour, we headed to the Senate Labor and
Industrial Relations Committee board meeting. Here we heard several different
labor issues. It was really interesting because when they were presented to the
board, we were able to hear both sides of the issue. So when the bill was
presented, the people who opposed the bill immediately followed with their
explanation.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Following the board hearing, we met with Assemblywomen Connie
Conway. Connie is a Republican from Visalia, CA. She is the assembly minority
leader. The most interesting thing about Connie is that her son is a dairyman
in Tulare so her ties to the dairy industry are extremely strong. That is
exactly what we need in Sacramento!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Right before lunch we met with Senator Anthony Cannella.
Anthony is one of the few republican senators. He is from Ceres, CA and is a
business owner back home with his wife and kids. Senator Cannella has two years
left before he is termed out, where he jokingly said that he plans to run for
president of the United States next.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">This meeting took us right up to lunch where we met Michael
Marsh. We ate at Bistro Michel where everyone ate a french dip sandwich! We
regrouped and talked with Michael and Gary about what we thought so far.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Immediately following lunch, we had to run to the Assembly Ag
Committee hearing. We were luckily on time. If we were five minutes late, we
would have missed it all. The hearing didn’t take long. They heard one bill
about the California State Fair. They passed it and the hearing was adjourned.
I wish it would have lasted longer to get a better feel for the hearing
process. Never the less, it was still beneficial!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The most interesting legislator that we met in our time in
Sacramento was Assemblyman David Valadao. David is a republican from Hanford,
CA. Talking with David, I got a different feeling with him than I did with anyone
else we met with; almost a comfortable feeling. He was totally upfront with
everything. He talked about his family background, his time running for office,
his time in Sacramento, and his potential seat at the United States Senate. The
best part of it all is that he is a CA dairyman so he honestly knows exactly what
we are going through. The only people who know exactly what CA Dairyman deal
with, are dairyman themselves. It’s a big deal that Assemblyman David Valadao
is in Sacramento and is hopefully on his was to Washington D.C.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">We also met with two democrats during our time at the
Capitol. The first democrat we met with was Assemblywomen Fiona Ma. She is from
San Francisco and is the Assembly Speaker pro Tempore. She leads the assembly
floor. Fiona was very impressive. I wasn’t sure what to expect with her.
However, surprisingly enough, she greeted us with a two page document that
listed all the ag tours that she has taken in CA. It was impressive. When I
asked her why she tours all the different ag communities in CA, she simply
state; because I want to know where my food comes from. Simple and exact! I
would love to host Fiona and whoever else is interested in learning more about
where their food comes from. The other Democrat we briefly met with was Senator
Leland Yee from San Francisco also. Our time with Leland was brief but
positive. He has supported and carried a few bills for the dairy industry.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The last couple of visits were with the Berryhill brothers,
Senator Tom and Assemblyman Bill. Tom is a republican who represents Modesto
and Bill is also a republican who represents Ceres. We met with the Berryhill
brothers separately, but both were strong supporters of many of the same
things. The two of them are strong fighters for the water issues in the central
valley farming community, which is a major issue in California. The Berryhill
families are big tree and vine farmers in Modesto, CA.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Wednesday evening we concluded with dinner at Chops
Restaurant. Chops sits directly next to the state capitol. It’s a local
favorite for the CA government community. We met a lot of legislators there.<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=2991365316015660229" name="_GoBack"></a></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Thursday morning, following breakfast, we were introduced on
the Assembly and Senate floors. On our way there, we took pictures with Senator
Cannella and Assemblywomen Conway. Assemblyman Valadao and Senator Cannella
introduced us on the Assembly and Senate floors. We were told that it was
supposed to be on television but I was unable to find it. Following the
introductions, session two was adjourned.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Overall, session two was a success. I did not know what to
expect and I thought it turned out well. I thought Mr. Conover did a great job
facilitating our group for the two and a half days. He gave us great insight
and great information about the legislative process. I realized how important
it was to have a voice in Sacramento. And as a lobbyist, I was impressed with
Mr. Conover! I went home with a much better understanding of how everything
works in Sacramento.</span></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00717632686931404459noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2991365316015660229.post-13746269574300630132012-06-18T09:33:00.002-07:002012-06-18T09:33:57.137-07:00Session 1 - Media Training Day 2 of Session
1, Class XI participated in a Media Training workshop, presented by Leslie
Jones of Ketchum and Jennifer Giambroni of California Milk Advisory Board
(CMAB), along with Ketchum IT guy, Paul. The course was centered on preparing
class members in the event that we should be approached by a member of the
media or an inquisitive consumer.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
One thing that is important for
every member of the agriculture to understand is that having a specific
message, something specific to share with the consumer population, is vital to
being able to convey agriculture in a positive light. When presented with the
opportunity to address an issue, there is often a very small window of
opportunity available in which to get your message across. Knowing your message
in advance and being prepared when the time may arise will help bring your
message across in an organized and much more effective manner.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
In the event you may be
approached by a member of the media, and requested to provide an interview or a
statement, it is extremely important to be prepared and ask the following
questions:<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
<div align="left" class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.75in; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-align: left; text-indent: -0.25in;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">1.</span><span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";">
</span><span style="font-family: Calibri;">What is the deadline for your story?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div align="left" class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt 0.75in; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-align: left; text-indent: -0.25in;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">2.</span><span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";">
</span><span style="font-family: Calibri;">What are you looking for?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div align="left" class="MsoListParagraphCxSpLast" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt 0.75in; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-align: left; text-indent: -0.25in;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">3.</span><span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";">
</span><span style="font-family: Calibri;">May I contact you back at another (scheduled)
time?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
It is also ok to
remember that at any time it is acceptable to deny or deflect the interview.
You are at no time required to provide a statement if you are not comfortable
or prepared.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
When giving an interview, it is
important to <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">get to the point.</b> Don’t
beat around the bush, so to speak. The entire interview may be edited down to a
single sentence, or limited to 30 seconds in length. If it takes 42 seconds to
get to the point you are trying to make, you may not get the opportunity to
share your message. Also, <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">never say
anything you don’t want to read/hear about later</b>. By being prepared in
advance, having your key message under your belt and on the tip of your tongue,
it will come more fluid and you won’t flounder around trying to find the right
words.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Avoid “no comment”</b>. By saying “no comment”, or refusing to answer a
question in an interview, you may mistakenly convey the impression that you
have something to hide. Instead of refusing to answer a difficult, ugly or
awkward question, be prepared to turn it around into a positive, and come back
to reiterate your key message. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Take your
time to answer a question – it is OK to pause</b> before answering a question.
By taking a breath before answering, you allow yourself the time to reflect on
the question in your mind, consider your answer and again bring your answer
back to your key message. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">It is alright
to admit, “I don’t know…”</b> when you are asked a question. Do not attempt to
answer a question you if are not 100% certain of the answer. Do, however, be
prepared to offer to find the answer and report back, or put the interviewer in
touch with someone who can answer the question.<o:p></o:p><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiGr9dwWsebNuGi8RzIcUCqhhWzLfRRngu1ENjvr1edtTMWi9fZgDFsHEdSuIF5kChbZC-zRw58bw0dT02ZiE0hRsEHUPadKg1Sn_4jIGlNGNbC4N4gmFxJxIpezLf2w_8cn_OLdv_1pHF/s1600/Social+Media2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiGr9dwWsebNuGi8RzIcUCqhhWzLfRRngu1ENjvr1edtTMWi9fZgDFsHEdSuIF5kChbZC-zRw58bw0dT02ZiE0hRsEHUPadKg1Sn_4jIGlNGNbC4N4gmFxJxIpezLf2w_8cn_OLdv_1pHF/s320/Social+Media2.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>photo curtesy of Mark Looker</i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Don’t use acronyms or industry terminology</b>. Use of acronyms or terms
that viewers do not understand can make for a confusing conversation. Be sure
to layout the terms of an acronym, such as “F.A.R.M. Program certification –
which stands for<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"> </b>Farmers Assuring
Responsible Management” before proceeding with the interview. This will help
your viewers feel connected and more inclined to listen to the rest of the
conversation. By using industry terminology, routine practices may come across
as harmful or abusive. For example, drenching, used to give cows needed fluids
by oral injection, may have a different meaning to those unfamiliar with the
process.<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><o:p></o:p></b><br />
<br />
The presentation team provided
many video excerpts of interviews where interviewees held fast to their key
message, used in depth industry lingo that more than confused the panel and
took over two minutes to get to the point they were trying to convey. They
provided excellent examples before we began the on-camera portion of the
workshop.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
Each class member was then given
the opportunity to be interviewed on camera. After each interview, the video
was reviewed and discussed amongst the class. The first round was pretty rough,
as none of the class members had any type of extensive media training. Ms.
Jones, having a media background, was able to accurately portray a reporter who
would pick pieces of statements and show how things could get out of hand. It
can be great to <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">take the opportunity to “lead”
the interview</b>. By answering questions in a specific way, the interview can
change direction and help you convey your key message. <o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
For example: should your key
message be: <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">We do our utmost to ensure
our animals are well cared for</b>; and the question arises: Why are baby calves
pulled from their mothers after birth and placed in little cages? The question might
be answered in the following way: We do our utmost to ensure our animals are
well cared for. Calves on our farm are removed from their mothers within hours
of being born, and placed in a special nursery area. This allows us to provide
individualized care for both the mother and the baby, by making sure that the
baby gets proper nutrition and is in a clean, safe environment where she/he can
be monitored during its first days. The mother is also placed under special
care, for new mothers, to be sure she remains healthy and receives appropriate
nutrition requirements. We do our utmost to ensure our animals are well cared
for.<br />
<div align="left" class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="margin: 1em 0px; text-align: left;">
By presenting the key message up
front, highlighting the question and directly answering, without using acronyms
or industry terminology, and again reinforcing the key message at the end, “tearing
babies from their mothers” does not become an issue, rather the farmer’s
priority of individualized attention and care becomes the focus.<o:p></o:p></div>
After the initial round of on
camera interviews, the class was given a second chance in the spotlight and it
was great to see how the topics we discussed following the first round of
questions helped each member to improve in their response.<o:p></o:p><br />
<br />
Should you be asked to give a statement
or interview, it is important to remember to ask the focus and deadline of the
story, as well as ask for contact information. Immediately contact the CMAB and
request a mini-media training review to help determine the key message for the
story in question. The team is available and ready to help you prepare to be in
the public spotlight.<o:p></o:p>Ellenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13156913027891809695noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2991365316015660229.post-5128635791479793762012-06-13T20:08:00.001-07:002012-06-14T13:47:35.481-07:00A Tour of the Capitol<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
On May 22nd the leaders of WUD met in San Francisco. The session started with Dr. Neil Koenig. In this time we investigated the "in's and out's" of being a strong, stable leader. This was also the first time we met our fellow classmates. After a while, we broke into groups to discuss leadership and make formal introductions. That evening we met John and Martha Vlahos at the North Beach Restaurant in North Beach. John has been a representative of the dairy industry for many years. We are all, as dairyman, indebted to his service.<br />
<br />
Day two started at the CMAB office for media training. It was a long learning curve for me. This is foreign to me. I now have a better understanding of the "do's" and "don't s" of being in front of a camera. Now I know what it takes to take part in a successful interview. The plans for that evening were a San Francisco bay cruise. A fun activity, other than my battle with sea sickness, that could enable us to let loose a little bit.<br />
<br />
Overall I feel I learned a lot about many different things, things that are very valuable to know. It was very important for me to get out of my comfort zone and now I have much more knowledgeable about interviews. I can utilize this information when interviewing employees on my own dairy, and becoming a stronger leader.<br />
